Doreen's story

13-year-old Lillian is at home and not in school. But she doesn’t want to be because she loves science and has ambitions to be a teacher when she grows up. But like up to 20 of her classmates each day - 5% of her school – she is ill with malaria. Her mum, Doreen, worries every time one of her children show signs of malaria as the nearest health centre is a long walk away – a journey that takes even longer if she is carrying a sick child. "Everyone in my family gets malaria on and off. It’s something we’ve always lived with."

But Doreen and families like hers are benefiting from a programme Malaria No More UK supports that is training over 300 Community Health Volunteers who will take malaria care into communities and people’s homes. It will mean that everyone – including Doreen – will have someone they can turn to for malaria protection advice, quick diagnostic testing and treatment. That means Lillian and her brothers and sisters have a better chance of staying well and not missing out on school.
