We have a new CEO: Dr Astrid Bonfield
We're proud to announce the appointment of Dr Astrid Bonfield as our new CEO. With more than two decades of experience leading high-profile charitable foundations all over the world, Dr Bonfield’s unparalleled expertise, leadership, and global vision are an invaluable addition in the urgent fight to end this preventable, treatable disease which is still killing a child every minute.
Awarded a CBE in 2014 for her services to charity in the UK and abroad, Dr Bonfield was a co-creator and Chief Executive of The Vision Catalyst Fund and, as Chief Executive of The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, she raised over £100m and successfully implemented eye health programmes in 28 countries throughout the Commonwealth.
I am delighted to be joining Malaria No More UK as its Chief Executive at this critical time for the sector. I began my career leading an NGO working in informal settlements in Zimbabwe and have seen first-hand the devastation that malaria brings to families and communities. At such a hopeful moment with science now developing many of the new tools – new bed nets, vaccines, treatments and tests- which together could help end deaths from malaria in our lifetime, I look forward to the opportunity to support efforts to drive towards our common goal to end malaria for good.
Under Dr Bonfield’s leadership, The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund became the first investor in the Cluster Munition Coalition which, over an eighteen-month period, successfully secured an international treaty banning cluster bombs. Prior to this, Dr Bonfield developed a policy unit for the Aga Khan Foundation (UK) and represented the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in Brussels, as well as working as a Programme Development Specialist for the Bernard van Leer Foundation in the Netherlands.
I’m delighted that Astrid is joining the team at Malaria No More UK as our new CEO. She will bring a wealth of international experience and knowledge to this role at a crucial time in the fight against malaria as new and exciting innovations are developed and we work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing malaria globally by 90% by 2030. As Board Chair at MNM UK I look forward to working with Astrid and the team to help end this treatable and preventable disease, and realise the enormous future potential of men, women and children living in malaria-endemic countries around the world.
