Fight to end malaria recognised in UK government policy paper
We are incredibly proud to see our work to champion the fight against malaria referenced in yesterday’s International Development White Paper – an important and encouraging recognition to see in a government policy document.
We also welcome the paper’s acknowledgement of the growing challenges of antimicrobial resistance and climate change – timely reminders that we still need to invest if we are going to Finish the Job and achieve zero malaria in our lifetimes.
As a climate-sensitive disease, extreme weather events and changing climate conditions pose significant challenges to malaria programmes, something we’ve seen following flooding in Mozambique and Pakistan, where malaria cases surged.
The impact of malaria is most harshly felt by children and pregnant women, with a child still dying every minute due to the disease. It’s vital that governments urgently ensure there is adequate funding to make sure health systems and malaria programmes are more resilient in the face of a changing climate and able to rapidly respond to extreme weather events.
By investing in multilaterals like the Global Fund and Gavi, and by continuing to back British scientific research, including game-changing vaccines and next-generation mosquito nets, we can end malaria once and for all. And in doing so, we both save lives and increase the resilience of health systems, better preparing us for climate emergencies.
The White Paper serves as a timely reminder that we must continue to invest, to work in partnership and to commit to unlocking new financial resources where possible. The fight against malaria is one we can and must win.
