Our response to the UK government’s cut to the foreign aid budget
The UK Government has made the decision to cut its foreign aid budget from 0.5% to 0.3% of GDP, this is our statement.
“Cuts of this scale could mean resetting the clock on the progress we’ve made in saving children’s lives by fighting malaria as well as making the UK more insecure against new health threats and weakening our economy through damaged trading partnerships.
“We must remember that whilst international aid is often spent abroad, its benefits are felt here at home in making the UK safer, healthier and more prosperous.
“To maintain our credibility and leadership with many international allies and trading partners, the UK Government must uphold its leadership in the fight against malaria, and protect its commitments to the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, as two critical bodies helping to end the disease around the world. If we do not, our national security will be damaged, our reputation with allies will be diminished and the ambition to end one of the world’s biggest child killer diseases will be undone for another generation.
