We’re happy to share our most recent Annual Report – an in-depth and exciting overview of our activities and impact in 2022 as we continued to work to end one of the world’s oldest and deadliest diseases.
From the Kigali Summit on Malaria and NTDs to a record-breaking Global Fund replenishment and more, it was a big year for the malaria fight and for our work.
As always, our vision is a world without malaria in our lifetime, and we’re proud of all we do to help get the world closer to this historic goal. Here’s just a taste of what we got up to – unwrap the new report to find out more.
The Kigali Summit
We helped lead a coalition of partners to deliver the Kigali Summit on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases in June 2022, where $4.25 billion was committed to fight malaria and NTDs.
The Summit saw powerful testimony from speakers including the then-Prince of Wales, now His Majesty King Charles III, Melinda French Gates and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Draw The Line Against Malaria
In May we launched the second phase of the Draw The Line Against Malaria campaign, injecting the malaria message into MTV’s Africa Day concert with energy and artistry. Having reached millions, the campaign delivered the voices of thousands of young people to leaders as they made commitments at the Kigali Summit.
The campaign also highlighted the stories and contributions of malaria champions – in the Annual Report, discover the story of Jesutomisin Apara, a malaria survivor who became a superhero scientist.
Our work in Kenya
2022 saw us join Kenyan partners to launch the Zero Malaria Campaign Coalition (ZMCC), a collaboration under the leadership of the Division of the National Malaria Programme, to accelerate efforts towards ending malaria in Kenya.
We’ve already been able to drive action: highlights included the formation of Kenya’s first Parliamentary Working Group on malaria, a youth-led World Malaria Day roadshow, and a commitment from the newly-elected President William Ruto to upscale investment.
Our work in the UK
2022 was an important year for our UK advocacy effort as the government was asked to continue historic leadership on malaria with a renewed commitment to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Ultimately our relentless campaigning played a vital role in delivering a £1 billion pledge from the UK to the Global Fund.
Why is investment in the Global Fund is so important to the malaria fight? In the Annual Report, discover the story of how new mosquito nets powered by British-backed science are protecting families in Tanzania – with the Global Fund key to ensuring these nets reached them.
In 2023 and beyond
In January this year we welcomed our new CEO, Dr Astrid Bonfield, who brings a wealth of experience and laser-focused commitment. We’ve also been able to welcome new board members with diverse insights and valuable expertise. We can’t wait to share what we’ve achieved in 2023, and already have ambitious plans for how we’ll accelerate the fight to end malaria in 2024. Thank you for your support.
