Bismark's story
Bismark is kept very busy in his role as a Physician’s Assistant at a hospital in northern Ghana. Of the 200 patients he sees every day, some 70% are suspected of having malaria. Because there are only two hospitals in this district of more than 800,000, people travel a long way to get there. It means some arrive too late with cases of malaria which prove fatal. What is harder is that Bismark knows it is children under five years old that are most vulnerable.
But just as a region-wide mosquito net distribution campaign that Malaria No More UK helped support was being launched, Bismark spoke of how pleased he was about this programme. “Prevention is better than cure and our clients are not sleeping under mosquito nets so I am pleased that free net distribution will be done soon here...If we have nets and reduce malaria then we’ll have fewer cases coming here and we will be very happy to rest our bones a bit!”
Aimed at ensuring every home in the area has a mosquito net this campaign will go a long way to helping protect more and more people from malaria. And less patients for Bismark to treat!
