Interfaith Action to tackle malaria
We work with individuals and groups of many faiths locally and globally in our mission to make malaria no more. In the UK, our partners include The Tony Blair Faith Foundation’s Faiths Act programme and this year two Faiths Act Fellows, Charlotte and Usman are on our team. They are dedicated to engaging a wide variety of faith groups in a shared humanitarian goal to end malaria deaths.
Faiths Act is a multifaith global movement which inspires and mobilises people of faith to take action towards the UN Millennium Development Goals, with a special focus on malaria and maternal health. Religion is often portrayed as something which divides people and causes conflict but the aim of Faiths Act is to show that when people of different backgrounds work together, faith can be a force for good.
How much change can you get from £1?
That’s the question which Faiths Act Fellows Usman and Charlotte have been asking faith communities to reflect on. Cooking up a low budget lunch, they brought together seven different faith traditions to share the table at a dinner party with a difference. The lunch was organised in support of the Live Below the Line campaign and the discussion on faith, food, poverty and malaria was captured in a short film.
Live Below the Line challenges people across the UK to live on £1 a day for 5 days, higlighling the plight of the 1.4 billion people in the world who live on this budget for everything, every day. Find out how Malaria No More UK is involved in this charity challenge.
Recently Charlotte and Usman trialled the challenge – which will take place nationally in May – and spent 5 days living on just £1 a day for all of their food and drink whilst raising funds to fight malaria in Ghana. Now it’s your chance to get involved and to challenge your family, faith community or interfaith group to Live Below the Line.
Many faith communities are familiar with the concept of fasting but Live Below the Line offers your group or congregation a new way to try to understand the difficulties experienced by those living in extreme poverty, while raising funds to help save lives from malaria. We are inviting individuals and groups of different faiths to unite behind a shared goal and Live Below the Line in solidarity, organising multifaith activities during the challenge. For more information and ideas on how to run an interfaith campaign, contact our Faiths Act Fellows.
1.4 Billion Reasons
1.4 Billion Reasons is a ground breaking presentation created by the Global Poverty Project which explains how we can put an end to global poverty. It’s already been watched by over 100,000 people worldwide and takes the audience on a journey to explore what it means to live in extreme poverty, barriers to progress including malaria and practical steps to get involved and help save lives.
Faiths Act Fellows Charlotte and Usman have teamed up with the Global Poverty Project to create an interfaith version of 1.4 Billion Reasons, highlighting the vital role of faith groups in fighting global poverty.
We are offering faith groups, universities and schools across the UK the opportunity to host this multimedia presentation from now until April 2012.
