Faith working to make malaria no more in Africa

Faith organisations play a vital role in Africa in the fight against malaria.

In Africa, 95% of people have religious beliefs and 75% of people consider religious leaders as people they trust the most.

Faith groups provide an estimated 40% of all health services on the ground in sub-Saharan Africa and this support rises up to 75% in countries which have suffered from extreme instability and economic collapse. Faith groups are also particularly effective at educating people about the dangers of malaria and how to protect themselves – an essential element in the fight against malaria.

NetsforLife is one of our partners working on the ground in Africa with faith groups. They work with local churches and faith-based groups to distribute bed nets and crucially, to make sure people know how to hang the nets and know about malaria prevention and treatment.

NetsforLife programmes have fantastic results: “Before your outreach to our village we witnessed up to 185 cases of malaria each month and as many as 20 children’s deaths. After six months of NetsforLife mobilising the community, distributing nets, and providing door to door health messages on malaria prevention and treatment, the number of reported malaria-related deaths dropped from 20 per month to zero per month.” Mr Augusto Mukano, a leader in Kinzala Velho, Angola
