Real Life Stories
ukJim Thomson, Banchory
Scottish father Jim Thomson runs his building business from his home town of Banchory where he is a leading member of the Rotary Club of Banchory Ternan. Along with fellow Rotarians, Jim helped lead fundraising efforts from the Crathes Vintage Car Rally in May 2011 which raised £12,000 for charities including Malaria No More UK.
Fighting malaria is a cause close to Jim’s heart as his 21 year old daughter Debbie lost her life to the disease on 15 March 1995. Debbie was just 21 and working as a photographer in Johannesburg, South Africa. She decided to visit Zimbabwe and soon after the trip she began to feel unwell. She went to the Doctor but it was already too late when the diagnosis came – she had contracted cerebral malaria. Jim flew out to see her, along with his wife Betty and two sons Derek and Stephen and the family were by her side when Debbie passed away one week later.
Jim hopes that once others hear his story, and understand that malaria is a disease that it is easy to prevent and treat, they will want to get involved and help save lives in Africa.
One mosquito bite led to Debbie’s hugely tragic and unnecessary death. Today, malaria still claims the life of a child every minute Jim now does all he can to raise funds to help save lives from malaria in Africa. Jim hopes that once others hear his story, and understand that malaria is a disease that it is easy to prevent and treat, they will want to get involved and help save lives in Africa.
