Two volunteers with equipment ready to undertake net hang up

Exciting news, we have just completed purchase of enough supplies to hang 2.5 million long lasting insecticide treated nets in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. These supplies will be put to good use hanging nets supported by The Global Fund and the President’s Malaria Initiative through a campaign starting at the end of February aiming to cover around five million people – the entire population of the region.

It is amazing what is needed: over 12.5 million nails and rope are required to secure the nets, and it is a mammoth undertaking with multiple partners involved with recruiting, supporting and monitoring over 45,000 volunteers to take nets door to door. We are also helping to equip these volunteer teams with hammers and information cards used in AR campaign to help them hang nets in every home and supply key messages about their use and care.

Ashanti Region is the latest in a series of regional net coverage campaigns being coordinated by the National Malaria Control Programme, with support from a range of partners, aiming to ensure everyone has access to a net by the end of 2012.

Some of the team will be heading to Ghana to report back on some of this exciting work… and will be taking a special guest to learn first-hand about the impact of malaria. Keep an eye on our website this week for more information.
