Over 8,500 long lasting insecticide treated nets and accompanying education have now been distributed to some of Namibia’s most vulnerable people living in remote areas in the rural north.

Thanks to support from Malaria No More UK and using nets from the Global Fund donated through the Ministry of Health, trained community based Malaria Agents have been able to deliver these life saving nets direct to people’s homes. This distribution has been achieved in the face of significant challenges including severe flooding last year.

These nets are now being used by some of the people most vulnerable to malaria, young children and people living with HIV, and they are making a difference. Malaria Agents followed up with visits to over 1,100 homes at the end of 2011 and found no reported cases of malaria. In some of Namibia’s most malaria prone regions this is very encouraging news. We will be following up with an evaluation of activities later this year and look forward to reporting more results.

Over the course of 2012, we will also continue to support work to increase net coverage and follow up with messages about net care and use. Our in-country faith partner, the Anglican AIDS Programme, has already secured an additional 6,000 nets to distribute with our support over the coming months.

These distributions are part of a number of programmes in Namibia that we will be supporting and reporting back on during 2012.
