Malaria No More UK joined with other UK NGOs in an open letter to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, urging him to use the opportunity of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Summit this week and the Global Fund Replenishment meeting next month to demonstrate the UK’s continued leadership in tackling malaria, AIDS, TB and improving maternal and child health.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who will be representing the UK at this week’s MDG summit, has a key opportunity to demonstrate to the world the UK’s commitment to these issues and to achieving the Millennium Development Goals on health by 2015.

UK NGO’s also urged the DPM to use this summit to reiterate the UK’s support for the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. UK contributions have helped to establish the Global Fund as the leading international financing mechanism for these three diseases. Global Fund programmes have already saved over 5.7 Million lives, significantly contributing to MDGs 4, 5 and 6. However, without sizeable new commitments this year, these gains are in danger of being lost. The UK has a vital role to play in rallying support from national and private partners for this critical and effective institution.
