Big congratulations to Dougie Poynder – the newly crowned Jungle King and 2011 winner of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!

Dougie narrowly beat fellow finalist and friend Mark Wright. His genuine character and cheery nature won the nation’s hearts and votes and with every phone vote cast this year, 15p was donated to help us fight malaria in Ghana. And commiserations to Mark who was a fantastic contestant: we were thrilled when his team ran a competition on twitter to win his jungle hat signed in support of Malaria No More UK.

Dougie has seen the impact of malaria for himself on two trips to Africa with McFly. Sarah and Roz spoke to Dougie before he went into the jungle and he told us: “My bandmates and I from McFly spent three weeks in Africa visiting charity projects and we went to Uganda twice. We were playing with the kids and they were all super happy but then we heard that half of them had AIDS and or would suffer from malaria and many wouldn’t be here this time next year. That was really upsetting. We saw some quite bad cases of malaria in hospitals – tiny children who were sick. It’s insane that a preventable disease like malaria still does so much damage”.

Sarah Kline, our Executive Director says: “Thank you to all of the celebrities for helping us raise awareness and encouraging the public to vote on the show to help save lives. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching Dougie in action – he is a most deserving winner”.
