In 2010 Andy starred in a short film to highlight the need for nets in the fight against malaria. Watch the film below to see Murray on court and building up for a big serve but he is missing a vital ingredient – a net. Andy goes on to perform a series of rarely seen tricks while he waits for a net to highlight the need for nets as vital tools to stop the spread of malaria.
Andy Murray and David Beckham helped to launch Malaria No More UK in April 2009 at Wembley Stadium where the two sporting heroes played tennis over the world’s longest tennis net, made out of a mosquito net, to highlight that nets are a vital tool in preventing the spread of malaria. You can view them in action here. The pair also joined athlete Denise Lewis and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown for a photo call at Downing Street, placing a mosquito net over the front door of No.10.
“This is the first global charity I’ve been involved with in this capacity and it was an easy decision. Malaria is preventable and stoppable but yet it still kills more children in Africa than any other single disease. We can radically change this, it is a huge opportunity and I’m urging the UK public to help save a life and get behind Malaria No More UK, a truly world-changing and life-saving initiative.”
