Our Approach
Malaria No More UK recognises that ending malaria’s grip on Africa is one of the best humanitarian investments in the world today. Malaria is one of the biggest poverty-related diseases, so eliminating malaria will not only save lives, it will also dramatically help reduce poverty, and help achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
It has never been easier to prevent malaria – £5 is enough to buy, deliver and hang up a bed net to cover a mother and baby, or two children, to help protect them from malaria. Over 100 million bed nets have already been pledged by the G8 and EU – with your help, we will help see that pledge delivered as well as ensure more nets are successfully distributed and more people have access to prevention, diagnosis and treatment
We combine a powerful blend of funding, advocacy, popular campaigning and on-the-ground implementation to achieve our goal.
Our launch in April 2009 was timed to capitalise on the unprecedented global momentum to end malaria brought about by mounting political will and record global funding commitments.
A child dies every 45 seconds from malaria — so every second counts. The fastest way for us to have impact is to provide mosquito nets, rapid diagnostic tests and effective medicines. Our role is to use opportunities to save lives through communications, resources and investments. Each area of our work strengthens the others for maximum impact.
Communications
Malaria is a crisis — 780,00 deaths a year, and yet it is a preventable and treatable disease. Malaria No More UK creates breakthrough marketing campaigns, moments and media events that put malaria where it belongs: at the top of the agenda for policymakers and the general public.
We use the themes of sport, fashion, music and faith along with the experiences of people affected by malaria to engage as many people as possible in our cause and make it relevant to them. We often use a light-hearted approach to get across a serious message as well as creating more hard hitting features and films where appropriate. We also use social media, such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, to interact with our supporters and engage others in the fight against malaria.
Resources
Approximately £4 billion ($6 billion) a year is needed to achieve universal coverage of malaria prevention and treatment tools in Africa. But during 2010 the global community was only spending one third of this. Malaria No More UK is encouraging, enabling and inspiring governments, corporations, faith groups and the public to increase funds and ensure we can stop malaria deaths.
